San Mateo Rheumatology (SMR) began as a solo medical practice in 1992 dedicated to patients with Rheumatologic diseases. In 1999, as the treatment for Rheumatic diseases evolved, our practice was the first in Northern California to provide in-office, physician-monitored infusions utilizing a Biologic therapy for Rheumatoid arthritis.
It is important to understand that Biologic therapies do not cure Rheumatic diseases; however, they have been shown to halt the progression of joint deformities among patients with inflammatory arthritis. Some of these inflammatory diseases we treat in our office include Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, Ankylosing spondylitis, Vasculitis along with many other Rheumatologic conditions.
Since 1999, there have been over a dozen Biologic therapies introduced for the treatment of Rheumatic diseases. There are more on the way. We provide access to these therapies in a professional setting. In addition, SMR also provides treatment services to other physicians and their patients who suffer not only from Rheumatic disease and Osteoporosis but also Multiple sclerosis and Inflammatory Bowel disease. Furthermore, SMR further assists patients and physician offices in obtaining Pre-Authorizations from Insurers to facilitate access to these treatments.
Over the past 20 years, SMR has strived to provide a comfortable venue for patients receiving a variety of therapies for their medical conditions. We are staffed with highly trained nurses with hospital training who have been with us almost 20 years. In addition, we maintain a physician on premise during infusions in case our patients have medical questions or there may be emergency medical situations.
We encourage you to explore our website to learn more specific information on the diseases we treat, the therapeutic options available for specific diseases and the specifics regarding individual medicines, including length of in-office treatment for each one. Our staff is also well-trained and able to answer many of your questions while you are in the office and there is also a physician on premise for additional concerns during treatments.
Sincerely,
Michael P Stevens, MD FACR/ San Mateo Rheumatology, Pres/Founder 4/16/19
